Founded by an Admiral's Cup winner
Michael Schmidt, winner of the 1985 Admiral's Cup, took over a former East German boatyard in Greifswald in 1990. The operation began with repair and refit work, much of it for Scandinavian owners. Its first new boat, the Hanse 291, launched at the Hamburg Boat Show in 1993; developed from an Aphrodite design, it carried what the company describes as the first series-produced self-tacking jib. Judel/Vrolijk and Co shaped the range from the 1990s until 2017, when design passed to the French office Berret-Racoupeau. HanseYachts listed on the Frankfurt exchange in 2007, and Schmidt sold his stake to the Munich investment group Aurelius in 2011.

Hanse sells its boats on easy sailing, fast cruising and comfortable living aboard. Current models include the Hanse 410, 510 and 588, all developed and built in Germany.
