Chris-Craft is an American boat builder founded by Christopher Columbus Smith in Algonac, Michigan, in 1874. The brand became known for mahogany powerboats, then expanded into fiberglass sport boats, cruisers, and other powerboats. It also built military craft during World War II.
History and shipyard
Chris-Craft traces its roots to Christopher Columbus Smith’s first boat, built in Algonac, Michigan, in 1874. Smith later worked with his brother Hank, and the business evolved through names including Smith Ryan Boat Company and Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company before becoming Chris-Craft. Under family leadership, the company grew into a major builder of civilian powerboats and, by the 1920s and 1930s, a widely recognized American boat brand. During World War II, Chris-Craft also produced patrol boats, utility launches, and rescue vessels for the U.S. military.
Model range and design
Chris-Craft built wooden runabouts and mahogany powerboats in its early decades, then moved into fiberglass production in the 1950s. Its postwar lineup broadened substantially, reaching 139 powerboat models in the early 1950s. The company later returned to sport boats and performance-oriented designs, while also producing cruisers and other pleasure boats. Its name is closely associated with classic styling, varnished woodwork, and American recreational boating, especially in the mid-20th century.
