Frequently asked questions

Where are Royal Huisman yachts built?
Royal Huisman builds its yachts in Vollenhove, the Netherlands, where the shipyard has operated since Jan Jans Huisman founded it in 1884. Its Huisfit refit arm and the Rondal mast and rigging company are part of the same group.
Why is Huisman called Royal Huisman?
Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands granted the shipyard its Royal title in 1984, on the company's 100th anniversary, and Huisman was renamed Royal Huisman. The yard had built in wood from 1884, in steel from 1954 and in aluminum from 1964.
What is Royal Huisman known for?
Royal Huisman is known for large custom aluminum sailing yachts, each built to a single commission at its Vollenhove yard. It adopted aluminum in 1964, well before most builders, and it also delivers occasional one-off motor yachts.

Expert reviews of Royal Huisman boats

Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman has built fully custom yachts in Vollenhove since 1884; large aluminum sailing superyachts are its modern signature. Queen Beatrix granted the family firm its Royal title on the company's centenary in 1984. Alongside newbuilds, the group runs the Huisfit refit division and the Rondal rig and rigging company.

Wood, steel and aluminum since 1884

Jan Jans Huisman founded the shipyard in 1884, and for its first seventy years it built in wood. Steel arrived in 1954. In 1964 the founder's son Wolter moved the yard to aluminum hulls with the 30-foot Van de Stadt Avenir series, early for the industry, and the light alloy has been the house material ever since. The shipyard has stayed in Vollenhove throughout.

Custom newbuilds, Huisfit and Rondal

There are no production models. Each yacht is designed and engineered to a single commission, most of them large sailing yachts, with a motor yacht in the mix now and then. Two group companies work alongside the shipyard: Huisfit, which handles refits and updates of large yachts, and Rondal, founded in 1975, which builds masts, winches and rigging for luxury and racing sailing yachts.

Royal Huisman yachts on the market

Because every boat is unique, Royal Huisman yachts trade by name rather than by model number, and few reach the open market in any year. Those that do are mostly large sailing yachts, and a small selection is listed for charter and sale on GetBoat.
