Chris Gongriep and the Zaandam yard
Chris Gongriep founded the operation in 1990 as De Hemmes, a small yard set up to complete a traditional wooden barge of his own. The 31 meter sailing yacht Sapphire followed in 1996, and in 1998 the company acquired Dutch Built, a firm of naval architect André Hoek, and turned to aluminum construction and larger projects.
Rainbow, Athos and other notable launches
Athos, a 62 meter aluminum schooner delivered in 2010, ranks among the largest two-masted schooners ever built. Rainbow, delivered in 2012, is a 39.95 meter aluminum replica of the 1934 J Class yacht of the same name, and Topaz, a 42.6 meter J Class design, went into the water in 2015. Gongriep died in December 2016, shortly after a 12,000 square meter expansion of the Zaandam facility. The name carried on: VMG Yachtbuilders of Enkhuizen took over the Holland Jachtbouw brand in 2021 and continues new construction, refits and restorations of yachts up to about 130 feet from its own facilities.
