Francis Amos opened the original yard across the harbor from the naval dockyard at Portsmouth. William Camper took over its lease in 1824, and the Camper and Nicholson partnership formed in 1863 under Ben Nicholson. Its yachts raced in the America's Cup, the Fastnet Race, the Olympics and the Ocean Race, and its builds included Gipsy Moth IV and Bloodhound, the yacht sailed by Prince Philip. Clients included Thomas Sopwith and William Kissam Vanderbilt II. During both World Wars the yard also turned out small warships, work that continued into the 1950s.
Camper & Nicholsons International: the brokerage era
George Nicholson set up Camper & Nicholsons International in 1961 as the company's brokerage and chartering arm, with early offices in Cannes, Palma and Monaco. Sold to its management in 1989, the brokerage has traded on its own since, and today it arranges yacht sales, charters and management worldwide.
