Bertram is an American boat builder founded by Richard “Dick” Bertram in Miami, Florida, in 1960. The company is known for production powerboats and sportfishing yachts, especially fiberglass offshore models built around the deep-V hull. Its early reputation came from the Bertram 31 and the racing boat Moppie, which helped define the brand’s design direction.
Origins and ownership
Bertram Yacht began in Miami in 1960 after Richard Bertram commissioned and raced the deep-V Moppie, designed with naval architect C. Raymond Hunt. The success of that boat led to the Bertram 31, the company’s first major production model and one of its most influential designs. Bertram later expanded production and changed ownership several times, including acquisition by Whittaker Corporation in 1968 and later entry into the Ferretti Group portfolio in 1998. The brand has remained identified with American offshore boating and fiberglass construction.
Models and design
Bertram built a range of offshore powerboats and sportfishing yachts, with classic models including the 25, 31, 35, 38, 42, 46, 54, 58, and 72 Convertible. The brand’s boats are most closely associated with the deep-V hull, a design valued for seaworthiness in rough water and for offshore performance. Bertram’s early fiberglass production helped establish it as a benchmark in sportfishing boat construction, and later models extended the line into larger convertible yachts.
