Astondoa is a Spanish yacht builder founded in 1916 by the brothers Jesús and José Astondoa Martínez. The shipyard began in Portugalete, in the Basque Country, and later established its operations in Santa Pola, Alicante, on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. It builds recreational boats and yachts, including larger motor yachts and custom vessels.
History and shipyard
Astondoa began as a small carpentry workshop in Portugalete, where the founding brothers first built rowing boats and traineras. After the disruption of the Spanish Civil War, the family business resumed under Jesús Astondoa and later passed to the next generation in 1944, when Jesús Astondoa Santamaría joined the yard. In the 1960s and 1970s the company expanded from fishing and leisure craft into pleasure boats. In 1978 it moved its production to Santa Pola, Alicante, placing the shipyard closer to Spain’s Mediterranean boating market.
Models and construction
Astondoa shifted from traditional wood construction to polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass in the early 1980s. That change supported a broader range of motor yachts and helped the yard move into the superyacht segment. The company has built more than 3,000 vessels over its history and is known for family ownership across multiple generations. Its range has included production yachts and custom projects, with larger launches such as the 45.8-meter ARRAFIQ and the Astondoa 100 Century marking its upper-end capability.
