The 'Klipperaak' is derived from the Dutch inland clipper and is distinguished from the (inland) clipper by its stern. Instead of a receding stern and the stern behind the rudder stock, the clipperaak has a full and round stern with an attached rudder, like the aak or tjalk. That is why the ship originally had no steering wheel but a tiller to steer. Because of this full stern, the ship had a larger aft ship than the clipper, so there was more living space for the skipper and his family. Clipper ships were built at various Dutch shipyards between approximately 1890 and 1930.
After sailing as a cargo ship under sail in Goes for many years, the ship was lengthened from the original 20m to 27.45m between 1995 and 2005 by the current owner and completely rebuilt from the original hull.
The entire superstructure, the wheelhouse, the engine room and steering gear, the navigation equipment, the cabins, all electricity and sanitary facilities were reinstalled with an eye for authenticity, professional quality and a high level of living comfort first and foremost. The result is a beautiful, habitable and perfectly sailing 'klipper' barge with a rich history.
The installed 'Brons' slow-moving diesel engine is the absolute cherry on the cake, preserving the authentic sailing properties of this ship, albeit without the sail mast and centreboard.
The living quarters on the ship have been carefully decorated with hand carvings in various exotic woods, and the East Indian style owner's cabin, with its hand-carved 'Kama Sutra' panel as the entrance door, is at the very least a dream come true.
Any lover of classic ships will hold this 'Mystique' in high esteem, a visit on board is possible by simple appointment with Nauticus Yachting via ####@nauticus.be or +32(0)486324570.
