Yacht insurance: build cover around the real cruising programme

Compare navigation limits, insured value, liability, machinery, crew and claims conditions before handover.

7 min readUpdated

The short answer

  • Disclose the yacht, operators, location and use accurately.
  • Compare exclusions, deductibles and claims mechanics alongside premium.
  • Bind acceptable cover before risk transfers at closing.

Describe the risk accurately

Provide build, construction, value, survey, machinery, refit, berth, cruising area, seasonal storage, operator experience, crew and private or commercial use. An attractive quote based on incomplete information may not protect the intended activity.

Read the practical limits

Compare navigation warranties, named-storm plans, lay-up requirements, machinery and latent-defect treatment, tender and water-toy cover, personal effects, salvage, pollution, liability, crew and racing exclusions. Check deductibles by loss type.

Coordinate survey, lender and closing

The insurer may require survey recommendations to be completed, while a lender may require specific insured values, loss-payee wording or policy territories. Align those conditions with the purchase agreement so cover is effective when title and risk transfer.

Common questions

What buyers ask next

Should a yacht be insured for purchase price?

The appropriate insured value depends on the policy basis, valuation and insurer. Discuss agreed value, market value, equipment and refit costs with a specialist broker rather than assuming the invoice is sufficient.

Will yacht insurance cover any country I visit?

Usually not automatically. Policies can have navigation limits, excluded territories and seasonal conditions. Obtain written agreement before changing the cruising area.
