Windy was founded in 1966 by Hugo Vold in Skarpnes on the Norwegian coast. The brand name comes from Vold’s father’s fishing boats, called Vindy, which inspired the company’s focus on seaworthiness and quality craftsmanship. Windy’s early production consisted mainly of cabin cruisers and day cruisers in the 22- to 30-foot range. In 2000, the company bought the former Royal Storebro shipyard in Västervik, Sweden, and later expanded into custom boatbuilding for the superyacht market.
Model range and design
Windy became known for fast, seaworthy planing hulls and sporty powerboats, especially from the 1990s onward. Naval architect Hans Jörgen Johnsen helped develop signature models such as the Mistral, Ghibli, Bora, and Scirocco, which became closely associated with the brand. Windy later entered the tender and chase-boat segment, with the SR52 Blackbird becoming a notable milestone for the company. The builder says its range now extends from smaller sports boats to bespoke luxury craft for private owners and superyachts.
