Valiant

Valiant Yachts was an American sailboat builder best known for the Valiant 40, a cruising yacht introduced in 1973. The company was originally associated with Seattle and later moved production to Texas under owner Rich Worstell. Its boats were designed for offshore cruising and performance rather than pure comfort.

Valiant began in the early 1970s when Nathan Rothman sought a cruising sailboat that could be handled by a couple yet still deliver strong offshore speed. He worked with naval architect Bob Perry, and the first Valiant 40 was launched in 1973. Production was first contracted to Uniflite in Bellingham, Washington. In the late 1970s the company changed hands, and in 1984 dealer Rich Worstell bought Valiant Yachts and later moved the operation to Lake Texoma, Texas.

Valiant is most closely identified with offshore cruising sailboats built around Perry’s performance-cruiser concept. The best-known models include the Valiant 32, 37, 40, 42 and 47, with later development leading to the Valiant 50. Sailboat references also list variants such as the Valiant 40 Pilothouse and Valiant 42RS. The brand is remembered for seaworthy hulls, good windward ability and a practical layout aimed at passagemaking sailors rather than coastal day use.
