Hallberg-Rassy has introduced the all-new Hallberg-Rassy 370, a 37-foot cruiser designed by Germán Frers that fits between the 340 and 400 models. Sweden's Hallberg-Rassy builds blue-water sailing yachts in Ellös on the island of Orust, a business with roots in Harry Hallberg's yard of 1943. Christoph Rassy bought the older builder's operation when Hallberg retired in 1972, joined the two names, and his family runs the company still.
Two rival yards, one name
Harry Hallberg started building boats at Kungsviken on Orust in 1943 and later moved to larger premises in Ellös. Christoph Rassy, a boatbuilder who had taken over Hallberg's vacated Kungsviken workshop, competed with him for years. When Hallberg retired in 1972, Rassy bought the Ellös yard and the merged name stuck. His son Magnus Rassy has led the company since 2003, and total production stands near 9,800 boats.
The center cockpit formula
Most Hallberg-Rassys share the same recognizable elements: a protected center cockpit behind a fixed windshield, a blue stripe along the hull, walk-through access to the aft cabin, and construction aimed at ocean passages. Germán Frers has drawn the yard's new models since 1988, and boats to his designs account for close to 40 percent of everything built. The current range runs from the 34 foot Hallberg-Rassy 340 to the flagship 69.
The secondhand Hallberg-Rassy market
Hallberg-Rassys are bought for long ocean use and tend to stay in service, so the used market covers five decades of production. GetBoat's listings reach from the Rasmus 35, the model Christoph Rassy brought into the merger, to later boats such as the Hallberg-Rassy 42F and the 54. Most trade as private cruising yachts, with occasional charter boats among them.
