Lurssen

Lürssen is the German shipyard behind several of the world's largest private yachts, including the 180-meter Azzam, built at family-run yards around Bremen. The business dates from 1875 and has never left the founding family, now in its fourth generation. Superyachts run alongside naval shipbuilding, the group's other long-standing line of work.

Friedrich Lürssen opened a boatbuilding workshop in Aumund, on the northern edge of Bremen, in 1875, at the age of 24. Today the company headquarters sit in Bremen-Vegesack, with shipbuilding facilities in Lemwerder, Berne and Bremen, and fourth-generation family members run the business. In 2025 the group took over the insolvent Nobiskrug yard in Rendsburg and made it part of the neighboring Lürssen-Kröger site.

Azzam, delivered in 2013, measures 180 meters and was the longest superyacht in the world when it left the yard. Dilbar, launched in 2016, became the world's highest-volume superyacht, a ranking based on interior volume rather than length. Earlier deliveries include Octopus, built for Paul Allen, and Rising Sun, built for David Geffen. Lürssen builds to individual order rather than in series.

Since every Lürssen is a one-off, charter is how most people ever step aboard one. A small number of the yard's superyachts take charter bookings at the top of the market, and existing hulls change hands through specialist brokers. Lürssen builds appear among GetBoat's charter and sale listings.
