Chris Gongriep and the Zaandam yard
Chris Gongriep founded the operation in 1990 as De Hemmes, a small yard set up to complete a traditional wooden barge of his own. The 31 meter sailing yacht Sapphire followed in 1996, and in 1998 the company acquired Dutch Built, a firm of naval architect André Hoek, and turned to aluminum construction and larger projects.
Rainbow, Athos and other notable launches
Athos, a 62 meter aluminum schooner delivered in 2010, ranks among the largest two-masted schooners ever built. Rainbow, delivered in 2012, is a 39.95 meter aluminum replica of the 1934 J Class yacht of the same name, and Topaz, a 42.6 meter J Class design, went into the water in 2015. Gongriep died in December 2016, shortly after a 12,000 square meter expansion of the Zaandam facility. The new halls were leased to Royal Huisman, another Dutch builder, and the Port of Amsterdam bought the site in 2019. The name carried on: VMG Yachtbuilders of Enkhuizen took over the Holland Jachtbouw brand in 2021 and continues new construction, refits and restorations of yachts up to about 130 feet from its own facilities.
