Brooke Marine built boats and small ships for civilian and commercial customers, and minor warships for the Royal Navy and for the navies of Oman, Australia, Kenya and the United States. The British government nationalized the firm in 1977. The original company closed in 1987, a successor called Brooke Yachts traded until 1992, and a last revival under the name Brooke Marine Yachts ended in 2009.
Al Said, Virgin Atlantic Challenger II and Young Endeavour
Several Brooke hulls became famous in their own right. Al Said was Oman's royal yacht and naval flagship. Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, the aluminum powerboat that carried Richard Branson across the North Atlantic in June 1986, set a crossing record of three days, eight hours and 31 minutes. The sail training ship Young Endeavour, started by Brooke Marine and finished by Brooke Yachts, was Britain's bicentenary gift to Australia in 1988.
Brooke Marine yachts on the brokerage market
Nothing has been built under the name since the last revival closed in 2009, so the market is entirely secondhand. Surviving hulls change hands infrequently. A small number of Brooke Marine motor yachts are listed on GetBoat, and others surface from time to time with specialist brokers.
