Palmer Johnson

Palmer Johnson is an American yacht builder founded in 1918 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The company began as a small boatyard making and repairing workboats, then expanded into custom sailing yachts, aluminum yachts, and later luxury motor yachts. Its production history includes both traditional wooden craft and large custom superyachts.

Palmer Johnson began in 1918 as Johnson and Gmack in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, later becoming Sturgeon Bay Boat Works and then Palmer Johnson Yachts in 1956. Early work focused on rowing skiffs, commercial fishing vessels, and small wooden yachts, with wartime production shifting to military vessels. The builder is associated with the Great Lakes region and later expanded its operations beyond Wisconsin, while maintaining a long identity as a custom yacht yard.

The company became known for pioneering aluminum yacht construction in the 1960s, starting with the aluminum yacht Isanti in 1962. Over time, Palmer Johnson built custom power yachts and sailing yachts in a broad size range, from around 80 feet to 195 feet. The brand is also linked with notable large projects such as Fortuna and La Baronessa, and with performance-oriented designs that helped define its reputation in the superyacht market.
