A boat excursion from Castel dell'Ovo to Nisida offers a fascinating journey through history, legends and natural beauty of the Neapolitan coast. Here's what you might see during the journey and the stories linked to these places:

1. Castel dell'Ovo

Your journey begins from Castel dell'Ovo, the oldest castle in Naples. It is located on the islet of Megaride, where the Greeks founded the first nucleus of the city of Partenope. The name of the castle comes from the legend according to which the Latin poet Virgil, considered a magician in the Middle Ages, hid a magic egg in the cellars. It was believed that if the egg broke, the city of Naples would fall into ruin.

2. Lungomare Caracciolo

Navigating along the Lungomare di Napoli, you can admire one of the most suggestive panoramas of the Mediterranean, overlooking Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples. This stretch of coast is loved by Neapolitans and offers a perfect view of the city, from the Vomero hills to the sea.

3. Posillipo

Continuing, you will pass in front of the coast of Posillipo, famous for its historic villas and natural caves. One of the best known is the Grotta di Seiano, a tunnel dug in Roman times that connects the coast of Bagnoli with the Archaeological Park of Pausilypon. The word “Posillipo” comes from the Greek “pausilypon”, which means “that makes pain cease”, a testimony to the serenity that the place has offered since ancient times.

4. Palazzo Donn’Anna

Another suggestive point is Palazzo Donn’Anna, a grandiose unfinished building overlooking the sea. Its history is linked to legends of ghosts and tormented loves. It is said that the noblewoman Anna Carafa, who had the palace built in the 17th century, was an enigmatic figure and that the palace has been the scene of mysterious disappearances and intrigues. According to a legend, the spirit of one of Anna’s ladies-in-waiting, who mysteriously disappeared, still haunts the ruins.

5. Gaiola and the Submerged Archaeological Park

Arriving near Gaiola, you will see a small island connected to the mainland by a small bridge. It is famous for the Gaiola Underwater Archaeological Park, where remains of ancient Roman villas are visible under sea level. However, the place is also known for the curse of Gaiola: the villa on the island has been inhabited by several famous people, many of whom have suffered tragedies or misfortunes, fueling the belief of a curse linked to the place.

6. Capo Posillipo and Marechiaro

Continuing, you will skirt Capo Posillipo and the picturesque village of Marechiaro, famous for its "small window" overlooking Vesuvius and for its ancient fish restaurants. Marechiaro has been sung about in many Neapolitan songs and is a place full of romantic charm.

7. Baia di Trentaremi

Next, you will pass by the Baia di Trentaremi, a wonderful natural inlet with high cliffs. The bay is part of the Pausilypon Archaeological Park, and under the sea there are remains of ancient Roman buildings. The name "Trentaremi" may derive from "thirty oars", referring to an old legend about pirate ships hiding in this bay.

8. Nisida Island

The excursion ends at Nisida, a volcanic island connected to the mainland by an artificial road. Nisida has a fascinating history: it was inhabited in Roman times and a castle was built there in the Middle Ages. Today it houses a juvenile prison, but remains surrounded by legends. Nisida is said to be the island of Calypso, the nymph who, according to Greek mythology, held Ulysses for years. Furthermore, it is said that its caves and its coast have inspired poets and writers.
