Rent a Motorboat

Motorboat is an engine-powered boat up to 12 meters in length. Depending on the size and type, a motorboat can have different propulsion systems, hull shapes, and various purposes. For example, if the boat's mission is to go into the open waters, a V-shaped hull will keep it stable on the waves. Moreover, shallow water purpose boats will have more of a flat bottom.

Motorboats in history used both gas and diesel engines. However, due to diesel engines' many benefits like low fuel consumption and cheaper fuel, boats intended for charter purposes mainly run on diesel.

Propulsion systems

Before moving on to boat types, we'll describe different engine kinds that power a motorboat. The most common engine types are inboard motor, outboard drive, jet drive, and sterndrive.

  • The inboard engine is mounted inside the boat and has an external drive unit. It is connected to a propeller with a shaft that runs throughout the boat's hull. When the engine spins the shaft, the shaft rotates the boat's propeller.

  • The outboard engine is usually mounted on the transom, outside of the boat. Engine, propeller, and transmission are all part of the same unit. Outboard engine propulsion is often found on inflatable boats.

  • In stern drive motor boats, the engine placement is inside the hull, and it has an outboard steering unit. Turning the steering unit makes the whole ship turn.

  • The jet drive system is a large water pump that uses seawater to achieve speed. This type of propulsion is trendy for water toys like jet-skies.

Different types of motorboats

With time different types of motorboats appeared on the boating scene. Some are best for saltwater, some for seawater, some are great for shallow water, and others are excellent fishing vessels. Different purposes meant that the boat had to have various features. There are more than twenty types of motorboats. Here are some of them:

  • Houseboat- the houseboats' purpose is, as the name says, for living onboard a boat. That means their maneuvering and cruising performance is pretty basic. They are equipped with a galley, dining area, sleeping quarters, and everything you might need to live on board.

  • Inflatable boats come in different sizes. Since you can deflate them completely, inflatables are a great addition to yachts and sailboats. Of course, an inflatable boat can also be used independently. They have inflatable side tubes, a flexible bottom, a small outboard engine, and paddles, just in case.

  • R.I.B's- inflatable sides combined with hard bottoms that can be either aluminum or fiberglass. They can be superfast transport vessels for 10+ people, have several superpowerful engines, a center steering console, and be quite expensive. R.I.B's are great for one-day excursions for groups or as a tender vessel to bigger yachts.

  • The deck boat can be a day cruiser or have a cabin or two under the deck. It's a pretty wide boat and offers excellent deck space.

  • Cuddy cabin- this type of motorboat has a cabin, but a relatively small one. An excellent boat for couples and overnight fishing trips.

  • A Bass boat has a shallow draft, and it is commonly used in protected water systems for fishing.

  • The Center-console boat has, as the name suggests, a central console surrounded by a walkaround. Usually, they have an outboard engine. There are no cabins, so it's more suitable for day trips.

  • High-performance motorboats are all about speed. A lot of horsepower combined with light structure makes them ideal for racing.

  • A Cabin cruiser is a motor-powered vessel that has one or more cabins. Ideal for more extended stays on the water.

Advantages of a motorboat

Above all, the most significant advantage of a motorboat is that it is easy to drive, steer, dock, and drop anchor. Remember that you need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid license to navigate a boat in almost every country. Another key point is that they are pretty affordable both to buy and charter. As well, ports tend to charge mooring place according to the boat length. A smaller boat means lower marina expenses.

Day cruises charter is an affordable, family-friendly vessel great for sightseeing. It can be an inflatable boat, bowrider, or deck boat. One more significant advantage of the day cruisers is that it is easy to maneuver and simple to dock. On the negative side, a day cruiser has no cabins or heads, so it's not appropriate for overnight stays. Nevertheless, they are super popular for day charter purposes.

Smaller versions of cabin motorboats can have basic accommodation suitable only for couples. The cabin is all in one (storage area, bead, and head). Bigger motorboats are more comfortable and can fit a smaller family. For example, a 12-meter motorboat can have two cabins, head galley, and be suitable for more extended cruising.

Best charter ideas

To sum up: if you plan to charter a day cruiser, the best is to pick a land-based accommodation in the vicinity of a marina. If you plan to spend your holiday on board, choose your boat accordingly to the number of cabins needed.

Excellent motorboat destinations are the ones that have a vast number of islands. Suggest you pick either Greece or Turkey; these countries have a good infrastructure for boats. Have many ports, marinas, bays, and coves to hide out during rough weather conditions. Multiple bays have buoys that you can use for mooring during the night. It is also easier to find a place during the high tourist season for a small motorboat than for a 20-meter motor yacht.
