Triton Submarines company, the American manufacturer of the civilian submarines, presented unique video footage of submersion to the Titanic which sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. Caladan Oceanic divers made 5 submersions in the Limiting Factor submarine. Modern equipment made it possible to capture high-quality images and create an accurate 3D model of the Titanic with them. The last submersion to the sunken liner was in 2005.
«The most fascinating aspect was seeing how the Titanic is being consumed by the ocean and returning to its elemental form while providing refuge for a remarkably diverse number of animals.» — said Patrick Lahey, co-founder of Triton Submarines.
As Parks Stephenson, a member of the expedition, notes, the right part of the deck and the captain’s orlop sustained the most damage. Little by little passengers’ cabins and radio room are vanishing. Such a process is only natural as the bacteria are consuming thin metal. Due to salt corrosion and powerful Atlantic streams, the materials of the upper floors of the ships are completely rotted away. The hull itself may last for a couple of decades more.
More than a century ago the Titanic was the most innovative and best-equipped ship not only in Britain but in the world. It was considered to be the largest passengers liner. In 1912 the ship collided with an iceberg and went down in 2h 40min after. Out of 2.200 people, onboard 1.500 died. Nowadays, the Titanic lies at a depth of 4.000 meters.
