The K1 Britannia Foundation plans to restore the legendary racing yacht of the 19th century Britannia. The construction will start next year, and a new version of the Britannia will be presented at the America's Cup in 2021.
The design of the yacht will be changed in accordance with the J Class Association, so that the new yacht could compete with the fleet of J-class. The Britannia will also be used for charitable purposes.
The shipyard and the naval architect have not been chosen yet. The Fund has decided that the new version will have a fully aluminum body and a carbon drilling rig. The smooth lines of the Britannia's predecessor created by GL Watson in 1893 were taken as an example for the yacht design
The trustee of the Fund, Priya Thirumur said:
"The trust’s vision for K1 Britannia is to bring back to life this extraordinary vessel as a truly enduring racing machine and a force for good. As one of the most instantly recognisable classic yachts of all time, the future Britannia will be distinctively equipped for a new era of yachting while also serving as an international flagship for youth initiatives and maritime causes the world over."
